Over the years I have made a few paintings of cities that have left a lasting effect upon me for many reasons, the most recent is my painting "Capital (Brussels)". Over the course of a year, this painting evolved into a diptych. This was important for me as I see that city as an open book! It has a rich and varied history that I wanted to incorporate into the work especially images of local architectural icons and statues. There is also a collage of a poster I found hanging from a wall in the Central Quarter of the city in 2018.
As an outsider, I find the energy of the people, the city, the many districts and ring roads exciting like my home city of London.
Through this painting I hope to convey that unique sense of colour and vivacity Brussels possesses which I particularly tune in to and, as a citizen of Europe, I admire. (Danny Rolph, March 2022).
