Though neon light is now associated with consumerism and cosmopolitan chic, it was invented in 1910 by the French engineer Georges Claude, who promoted their use for Nazi propaganda during the Second World War; it signifies the ease by which one ideology can be supplanted by another. Turk's Star co-opts neon's loaded political history for his own egalitarian means. In 1999, Turk made a wax work sculpture of himself posed as the Cuban revolutionary leader Che Guevara, a theme which he continues to revisit through both sculptural and silk screen self-portraits. Star is part of this series of work, which presents the motif simultaneously as communist emblem and Hollywood glamour - two opposing belief systems harmoniously brought together in Turk's utopian logo.
